Blackjack Basic Strategy: Cut the House Edge with Smart Play

Blackjack is one of the few casino games where your decisions genuinely move the odds. Play on instinct and the house edge balloons. Play basic strategy — the mathematically optimal decision for every hand — and you can shrink it to well under 1%. Here's the foundation.

The goal (and a common myth)

The aim isn't to get as close to 21 as possible — it's to beat the dealer. Sometimes that means standing on a "weak" hand because the dealer is more likely to bust. Basic strategy is built entirely around the dealer's face-up card, so always start there.

When to hit or stand

• Stand on hard 17 or higher — always. The bust risk outweighs the upside.
• Hard 12–16: stand if the dealer shows 2–6 (they're likely to bust); hit if they show 7 or higher.
• Hard 11 or lower: you can't bust, so improve the hand.

When to double down

Doubling doubles your bet for exactly one more card — use it when the odds favour you:

• Double on 11 against almost any dealer card.
• Double on 10 when the dealer shows 9 or lower.
• Double on 9 against a dealer's 3–6.

When to split pairs

• Always split Aces and 8s. Two Aces give you two shots at 21; splitting 8s escapes a weak 16.
• Never split 10s or 5s. Twenty is already a great hand, and two 5s make a strong 10 to double.
• Split 2s, 3s, 6s and 7s mainly when the dealer shows a weak card (2–6).

Skip the insurance

Insurance looks tempting when the dealer shows an Ace, but mathematically it's a losing side bet over time. Basic strategy says decline it and keep the house edge low.
